“I started working with personal trainer Alexis Gray at Built about 6 months ago. I am primarily a runner and was dealing with some injuries (past hamstring tear and unexplained foot pain) so I had been unable to run for a couple months. I decided to focus on strength training until I could start running again. I was only planning on working with Alexis for a month or two. However, I found that I enjoyed my time with her and looked forward to going to Built so much that I am still going two times a week (now six months later), even though I am running again.

I had been to my sports med doc three times for my foot pain, getting 2 sets of x-rays and an MRI. He had me doing PT exercises for my foot with no pain relief and finally referred me to an orthopedic surgeon since he was at a loss. In the meantime, I started working with Alexis. Within 3 weeks of doing her simple stretches and warm-up exercises, my foot pain started to dissipate and is now completely gone.

One of the things that impresses me the most about Alexis is that she gets to know her clients and is able to figure out what motivates them as well as how they learn best. For example, some of the exercises and equipment were new to me, and I was having trouble figuring out how to perform the exercise correctly. Alexis broke the move down for me step by step, having me perform modified movements and then adding on to them, until I was able to execute the entire move correctly.

I also like that when I'm working with her, I know her attention is on me 100%. She observes my form carefully and is constantly (constantly in a good way 🙂) giving me cues to ensure I'm getting the most out of each movement. While I've been performing some of the moves on my own for years (planks, clamshells, etc.), I know that I'm now executing them with proper positioning and form, thanks to Alexis's guidance.

I know that Alexis cares deeply about her clients. I decided to register for the Arnold Pump and Run (bench press and 5k run), which was a little outside my comfort zone in terms of the strength portion. Alexis helped me train for this event, provided encouragement along the way, and was excited for me on Competition Day.

Now that I'm back to running, I've noticed a difference since I've started training with Alexis. As most runners know, strong hips and glutes are important for proper running form. I feel like my running has benefited from the strength training I've been doing, which is an unexpected bonus.

As a facility, Built is extremely nice, with lots of equipment, machines, and tools for stretching and warming up. Everyone who goes there is friendly; at busier times, all the trainers work together to share equipment and allow others to jump in between sets, etc.
